Birżebbuġa Crash: Passenger Hospitalised After Car Plunges Into Sea

Emergency services rushed to Birżebbuġa’s Xatt is-Sajjied on Tuesday evening following reports of a car plunging into the sea, leaving one passenger hospitalised. The incident, which occurred around 7:30 PM, through the usually peaceful coastal town.

Car Plunges Off Promenade

The car, a silver Ford Fiesta, was seen speeding along the promenade before losing control and crashing through the barrier, plummeting into the Mediterranean Sea. Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud bang and seeing a cloud of dust before the car disappeared into the water.

“It happened so fast,” said Joe Xuereb, a local resident who witnessed the incident. “One moment the car was there, the next it was gone. It’s lucky no one else was hurt.”

Rescue Operation Launched

Police, firefighters, and Civil Protection Department personnel swiftly responded to the scene. They worked tirelessly to rescue the occupants of the car, with divers from the Armed Forces of Malta’s Special Duties Unit eventually pulling two people from the submerged vehicle.

The driver, a 28-year-old man from Żurrieq, was treated for minor injuries at the scene. However, his 25-year-old passenger, also from Żurrieq, was rushed to Mater Dei Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Investigation Underway

Police have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash. They are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or have information to come forward.

Birżebbuġa Mayor Norman Salamone expressed his gratitude towards the emergency services for their swift response. “Our thoughts are with the injured passenger and their family at this difficult time,” he said.

This is the second such incident in Birżebbuġa in recent months, raising concerns about the safety of the promenade. The local council has pledged to review the safety measures in place and consider additional precautions to prevent similar incidents in the future.
