Car Plunges into Wied is-Sewda: Motorist Hospitalised

Emergency services rushed to the scene of a dramatic road incident yesterday afternoon, where a car ended up in a field in Wied is-Sewda, leaving the motorist hospitalised. The incident, which occurred around 3 pm, caused a stir among locals and raised questions about the safety of the road leading to the popular valley.

Car Found Upside Down in the Field

Eyewitnesses reported seeing the car, a silver Ford Fiesta, veer off the road and tumble down the embankment, landing upside down in the field below. The driver, a 32-year-old man from Msida, was trapped inside the vehicle and had to be extricated by the Civil Protection Department’s rescue team.

“I was walking my dog when I heard the commotion,” said Joe, a resident of nearby Rabat. “I looked over and saw the car upside down. It was quite a shock.”

Motorist Hospitalised with Serious Injuries

The motorist was airlifted to Mater Dei Hospital with serious injuries. His condition is described as stable but critical. Police are still investigating the cause of the accident, but early indications suggest that the driver may have lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a bend.

Inspector Ian Spiteri from the Traffic Police told Hot Malta, “We are treating this as a serious incident. Our thoughts are with the motorist and his family at this time. We urge anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward.”

Safety Concerns Raised About the Road

The incident has raised concerns about the safety of the road leading to Wied is-Sewda. Locals have long complained about the lack of safety measures, such as guardrails, along this stretch. They argue that the narrow road, combined with the steep drop-off, presents a significant risk to motorists.

Rabat resident Maria Grech said, “I’ve been saying for years that something like this would happen. It’s about time the authorities do something about it.”

The Ministry of Infrastructure, Sustainable Development, and Planning has been approached for comment but has yet to respond at the time of publication.

Hot Malta will continue to follow this story as it develops. In the meantime, anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact the police on 112.
