Marsascala Crash: Motorcyclist and Passenger Fight for Life

Emergency services rushed to Triq il-Kbira in Marsascala yesterday afternoon following a collision that left a motorcyclist and his passenger critically injured. The incident, which occurred near the popular St. Thomas Bay, has through the close-knit community.

Scene of the Crash

The crash happened around 3 PM on Sunday, involving a motorcycle and a car. Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with the motorcycle ending up on its side and the car sustaining significant damage. The motorcyclist and his passenger were found lying on the road, unconscious and bleeding.

The main road, Triq il-Kbira, was closed to traffic for several hours as police investigated the incident and emergency services tended to the injured. Residents and tourists alike were left stunned, with many expressing their concern on social media.

Critical Condition

Both the motorcyclist, a 35-year-old man from Marsascala, and his passenger, a 28-year-old woman from Żabbar, were rushed to Mater Dei Hospital in critical condition. They are currently fighting for their lives in the Intensive Care Unit.

The driver of the car, a 45-year-old man from Ħamrun, was treated for minor injuries and released. Police have since impounded the vehicles and are continuing their investigations.

Community Response

Marsascala residents have been left reeling by the incident. “It’s not the first time something like this has happened here,” said a local shopkeeper who wished to remain anonymous. “We need something to be done about the speeding on this road. It’s a ticking time bomb.”

Marsascala Local Council has since issued a statement expressing their concern and offering their support to the victims and their families. They have also called for stricter enforcement of speed limits in the area.

Marsascala’s parish priest, Fr. Mark Sultana, has encouraged the community to pray for the victims. “Let us keep them and their families in our thoughts and prayers,” he said. “We also need to reflect on our own driving habits and remember that every life is precious.”

Road Safety in Malta

This incident highlights once again the pressing issue of road safety in Malta. According to the Malta Police, there have been 17 road fatalities so far this year, compared to 15 in the same period last year.

Road Safety NGO ‘Ġar-ID’ has called for urgent action. “We need to see more enforcement, better education, and improved infrastructure,” said a spokesperson. “Every life lost on our roads is one too many.”

Minister for Home Affairs and National Security, Byron Camilleri, has promised a crackdown on speeding and reckless driving. “We will not tolerate this kind of behavior on our roads,” he said. “Our thoughts are with the victims and their families, and we wish them a speedy recovery.”
