Children Bake Figolli for Charity in Malta
Little Hands, Big Hearts: Children Bake Figolli for Charity in Malta
In the heart of Rabat, Malta, a group of young bakers, barely tall enough to reach the kitchen counter, are busy kneading, rolling, and shaping dough. They’re not just learning to bake, they’re making a difference, one figolla at a time.
Figolli: A Maltese Tradition
Figolli, traditional Maltese Easter biscuits, are more than just treats. They’re symbols of Easter, shaped like rabbits, fish, or hearts, and often given as gifts. This year, they’re becoming tools for change, thanks to a unique initiative by the local charity, Heart of Malta.
Heart of Malta, based in the historic town of Rabat, has been supporting local communities for years. This Easter, they’ve launched a campaign called ‘Figolli for a Cause’, teaching children about charity while preserving a cherished tradition.
Baking with Purpose
Every Saturday morning, the charity’s kitchen transforms into a bustling classroom. Children, aged 6 to 12, don aprons and hairnets, ready to learn. They’re not just baking figolli; they’re learning about back.
“We want to instill in them the value of charity from a young age,” says Maria Camilleri, the initiative’s coordinator. “What better way than through something they love – baking?”
The children start with the basics – measuring ingredients, mixing dough, and shaping figolli. But the real magic happens when they decorate their creations. Each figolla becomes a unique masterpiece, ready to be sold for charity.
Selling Hope, One Figolla at a Time
After the figolli are baked and decorated, they’re sold at Heart of Malta’s Easter market in Rabat’s main square. The children take pride in presenting their work, explaining their designs, and counting the money raised.
“Seeing the children’s faces light up when they realize they’ve helped raise money for a good cause is priceless,” says Maria. “They understand that their efforts can make a difference.”
The funds raised will go towards Heart of Malta’s community projects, including support for local families in need and initiatives to preserve Maltese culture and heritage.
Figolli for a Cause is more than just a baking class. It’s a lesson in empathy, a celebration of tradition, and a testament to the power of community. And it’s all happening right here in Rabat, one figolla at a time.
So, this Easter, when you bite into a figolla, remember it’s not just a sweet treat. It’s a symbol of hope, baked with love by little hands for a big cause.
