Silence Broken: Former Minister Calls for Malta’s Voice on Palestine

In the heart of Valletta, at the bustling St. George’s Square, a lone protester held a placard, “Malta: Where’s Your Voice?” It’s a question that’s been echoing in the local political sphere, particularly regarding the ongoing conflict in Palestine. Dr. Michael Farrugia, a former Labour minister, has broken the silence, urging the government to speak up.

A History of Silence

Malta’s stance on the Israel-Palestine conflict has been a topic of debate among locals. While the government has historically maintained a position of neutrality, many Maltese, particularly within the Labour Party, have expressed solidarity with the Palestinian cause. Yet, the government’s public stance has remained largely silent, a fact that Dr. Farrugia finds troubling.

“We’ve always been a nation that stands up for what’s right,” says Dr. Farrugia, sipping an espresso at his favourite haunt, Café Cordina in Republic Street. “Our neutrality shouldn’t mean we turn a blind eye to injustice.”

The Call to Action

Dr. Farrugia’s call comes amidst escalating tensions in the Middle East. “We’re not asking for Malta to take sides,” he clarifies. “But we can’t ignore the human rights abuses happening in Palestine. We have a moral obligation to speak up.”

He’s not alone in his sentiment. A recent survey by Times of Malta showed that a majority of Maltese support the recognition of Palestine as a state. Yet, the government’s official stance remains unchanged.

“We need to remember our history,” Dr. Farrugia says, gesturing towards the Grandmaster’s Palace nearby. “Malta has always been a beacon of justice and fairness. It’s time we live up to that reputation.”
