Malta Blooms: Cherry Blossoms Paint a Japanese Touch in the Mediterranean
Imagine strolling down the bustling Republic Street in Valletta, the scent of sea salt and history lingering in the air, when suddenly, you’re transported to the serene gardens of Kyoto. This isn’t a dream; it’s the magic of cherry blossom season, now blooming in Malta.
Sakura in the Mediterranean
In an unexpected twist of nature, Malta’s Japanese community and enthusiasts have brought the tradition of hanami, or cherry blossom viewing, to our sunny islands. The cherry blossom trees, or sakura, are in full bloom, painting our streets and gardens with a delicate pink hue.
You can find these blossoms in various locations around Malta. The Japanese Association of Malta has planted several cherry blossom trees in the gardens of the President’s Palace in San Anton, which are open to the public. The trees in the gardens of the Japanese Cultural Centre in Msida are also a sight to behold.
Hanami: A Cultural Experience
Hanami is more than just admiring the blossoms; it’s a cultural experience that involves gathering with friends and family, picnicking under the trees, and appreciating the fleeting beauty of the blossoms. The Japanese Cultural Centre often hosts hanami events, offering traditional Japanese food and games.
Last year, the centre hosted a hanami event at the Msida Bastion Gardens, where locals and tourists alike enjoyed the blossoms, tried on traditional Japanese clothing, and even learned a few Japanese phrases. This year’s events are eagerly anticipated.
Bringing Japan to Malta
For the Japanese community in Malta, these blossoms are a symbol of home. “Cherry blossoms remind us of Japan, of the beauty and transience of life,” says Yumi, a Japanese expat living in Malta. “We’re glad to share this tradition with Maltese people and visitors.”
The cherry blossom season also brings a touch of Japan to Malta’s tourism scene. Hotels and restaurants are offering Japanese-inspired menus and packages, and cultural events are popping up around the islands.
Capturing the Moment
If you’re lucky, you might catch the blossoms at their peak. But remember, cherry blossoms are fickle; they can bloom and fade in a matter of days. Keep an eye on the Japanese Association of Malta’s social media pages for updates on the blossoms and events.
And when you do see them, take a moment to appreciate their beauty. As the Japanese saying goes, “Hana yori dango,” or ” dumplings over flowers.” Life is short, and like the cherry blossoms, it’s best to enjoy the moment while it lasts.
