Mellieħa’s Golden Bay: Two-Month Road Closure for Summer Revamp
Mellieħa’s Golden Bay to Get a Summer Makeover: Two-Month Road Closure Ahead
Imagine this: the sun is setting, painting the sky with hues of orange and pink, as you sit at one of Golden Bay’s beachside cafés, sipping on a cool drink. This idyllic scene, a staple of Maltese summers, is about to undergo a temporary transformation. The road leading to Golden Bay in Mellieħa is set to close for two months, starting this June.
Why the Closure? A New Pedestrian Zone Takes Shape
Mellieħa Local Council has announced plans to revamp the area around Golden Bay, aiming to create a more pedestrian-friendly space. The road closure, stretching from the roundabout at the entrance of the bay to the main car park, will facilitate these works. The project, titled ‘Golden Bay Revitalisation’, seeks to enhance the visitor experience by improving accessibility, safety, and aesthetics.
“We want to make Golden Bay a more enjoyable and comfortable space for both locals and tourists,” explains Mayor of Mellieħa, Dean Hili. “The new pedestrian zone will include wider footpaths, greenery, seating areas, and improved lighting. We believe these changes will significantly enhance the bay’s appeal.”
What to Expect During the Closure
During the two-month closure, starting from the first week of June, motorists will need to find alternative routes to access Golden Bay. The nearest available parking will be at Ghajn Tuffieha Bay, approximately 1.5km away. The council has assured residents and visitors that shuttle services will be provided to bridge the gap.
Pedestrians, cyclists, and wheelchair users will still be able to access Golden Bay via a temporary footpath that will remain open throughout the works. The council has also promised minimal disruption to beachgoers, with the main beach area remaining unaffected.
: A Revitalised Golden Bay
Once completed, the new pedestrian zone is expected to transform Golden Bay into a more inviting and comfortable space. The council hopes that these improvements will not only enhance the visitor experience but also boost local businesses, many of which have been struggling due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We’re confident that these changes will breathe new life into Golden Bay,” says Hili. “We’re looking forward to seeing the positive impact it will have on our local economy and community.”
So, while the road closure may cause some temporary inconvenience, it’s all part of Mellieħa’s plan to create a better, more enjoyable Golden Bay experience for everyone. Let’s embrace this summer makeover and look forward to the revamped space that awaits us.
