Motorcyclist Seriously Injured in Msida’s ‘Death Curve’

Emergency services rushed to Msida’s notorious ‘Death Curve’ on Tuesday evening, following a harrowing motorbike crash that left a young man grievously injured. The incident, which occurred around 7 PM, has once again brought into focus the urgent need to address the safety concerns along this treacherous stretch of road.

Scene of the Accident

The crash happened at the sharp bend near the Msida Marina, a popular spot for cyclists and motorists alike. Witnesses reported seeing the motorcyclist, a 25-year-old local resident, lose control of his bike as he navigated the curve at speed. The bike skidded and the rider was thrown several meters, landing heavily on the roadside.

Paramedics from the Malta Civil Protection Department arrived swiftly, stabilising the injured man before transporting him to Mater Dei Hospital. His condition was described as ‘serious but stable’.

Msida’s ‘Death Curve’: A Longstanding Concern

This isn’t the first time the Msida bend has claimed a victim. Locals have long sounded the alarm about the dangers posed by this stretch of road, which sees heavy traffic throughout the day. The curve, with its sharp angle and lack of visible markings, has been dubbed the ‘Death Curve’ by residents, who have been calling for safety improvements for years.

In 2019, a petition calling for traffic calming measures and improved signage gathered over 1,500 signatures. However, little appears to have changed since then. The recent crash has reignited calls for action, with many taking to social media to demand that the authorities finally address the issue.

Authorities Respond

Reached for comment, a spokesperson for the Malta Police Force confirmed that an investigation into the crash is underway. They urged anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward.

Meanwhile, the Ministry for Transport, Infrastructure, and Capital Projects has issued a statement expressing its concern over the incident. The statement promised a review of the road’s safety measures, with a view to implementing any necessary improvements.

Dr. Joe Mizzi, the Opposition spokesperson for Transport, has called for immediate action. “We cannot wait for another tragedy to strike before we act,” he said. “The ‘Death Curve’ in Msida is a ticking time bomb. We need to see concrete action, not just empty promises.”

As the investigation continues and the injured motorcyclist fights for his recovery, one thing is clear: the ‘Death Curve’ in Msida is a problem that demands urgent attention. The question is, will this latest incident finally be the catalyst for change?
