Little Hands, Big Hearts: Children Baking Figolli for Charity

In the heart of Malta, the aroma of freshly baked figolli fills the air at the St. Catherine’s School in Birkirkara. But this isn’t just any baking session. These figolli are not merely Easter treats; they’re little symbols of love and charity, baked by tiny hands with big hearts.

Figolli: More Than Just Easter Sweets

Figolli, traditional Maltese Easter biscuits, are not just a seasonal delight. They’re a symbol of our culture, a tradition passed down through generations. But for the children at St. Catherine’s, they’re also a means to give back to their community.

Every year, the school organizes a figolli baking session where the children, under the guidance of their teachers and parents, bake these delicious treats. But these aren’t your ordinary figolli. They’re baked with a purpose – to raise funds for a local charity.

Baking for a Cause

This year, the children have chosen to support Id-Dar tal-Providenza, a home for the elderly and disabled in Siġġiewi. The home, run by the Sisters of Charity, provides care and support to those in need, a cause close to the hearts of the children and their families.

The children, with their little aprons on, eagerly roll out the dough, cut out the shapes, and decorate the figolli with icing and sprinkles. Their laughter fills the air, intermingling with the sweet scent of baking figolli. It’s more than just a baking session; it’s a lesson in charity and community spirit.

Community Support

The figolli baking session is not just a school event. It’s a community affair. Parents, teachers, and even local businesses come together to support the cause. Some donate ingredients, others help with the baking, and many buy the figolli, knowing that their purchase is making a difference.

Last year, the school raised over €500 from the sale of their figolli. This year, they’re aiming to beat that record. Every figolla sold brings them one step closer to their goal, one step closer to making a difference in the lives of those at Id-Dar tal-Providenza.

So, this Easter, as you bite into your figolla, remember the little bakers at St. Catherine’s. Remember their big hearts and their desire to make a difference. And perhaps, you too can find a way to give back, one figolla at a time.

If you’d like to support the children’s cause, you can buy their figolli at the school’s Easter fair on the 15th of April. Every figolla sold will go towards their fundraising efforts for Id-Dar tal-Providenza.
