Malta’s ‘The Last Ones’ Heads to Screamfest
Malta’s Horror Sensation: ‘The Last Ones’ Heads to Screamfest
Imagine this: a chilling Maltese film, shot in the quiet streets of Mġarr, is about to grace the silver screen at Hollywood’s prestigious Screamfest. This isn’t a dream sequence from one of our local horror flicks; it’s reality. ‘The Last Ones’, directed by Daniel Farrugia, has been selected to screen at the 22nd edition of Screamfest Horror Film Festival in Los Angeles.
A Maltese Tale that Gripped the World
‘The Last Ones’ is a gripping tale of survival, set in a post-apocalyptic Malta. The film follows a group of survivors as they navigate a world ravaged by a mysterious virus. Shot in various locations around the island, including the quiet streets of Mġarr, the film’s Maltese backdrop adds a unique twist to the genre. “We wanted to show that horror can happen anywhere, even in the most peaceful of places,” says Farrugia.
The film’s success is a testament to Malta’s growing film industry. With its diverse landscapes and experienced crew, the island has become an attractive filming location. ‘The Last Ones’ joins a growing list of Maltese films gaining international recognition, including ‘Limbo’ and ‘Luzzu’.
From Mġarr to Hollywood: The Journey
Screamfest, now in its 22nd year, is one of the largest and longest-running horror film festivals in the United States. It’s a significant platform for independent horror films, providing a launchpad for many successful careers. For ‘The Last Ones’, this is just the beginning.
Farrugia and his team will be flying to Los Angeles for the festival, where they’ll join other filmmakers from around the world. “It’s an incredible opportunity to showcase Maltese talent on an international stage,” says Farrugia. “We’re not just representing ourselves; we’re representing Malta.”
Screamfest runs from October 12th to 21st. ‘The Last Ones’ will be screening on October 16th. The team is currently working on securing local screenings post-festival.
