Malta’s April Fools: From Sausage Ice Cream to Canine Crossings

It’s that time of year again when the line between reality and jest blurs, and Malta’s pranksters dust off their creative caps for April Fools’ Day. This year’s crop of local hoaxes has been as diverse as our island’s culture, ranging from the culinary to the canine. So, grab your thinking caps and let’s look some of Malta’s most ingenious April Fools’ pranks of 2023.

Sausage Ice Cream: The Taste Sensation That Never Was

Kicking off the prank season was local ice cream parlor, Gelateria San Marco, nestled in the heart of Mdina. They announced their latest ‘flavor of the month’ – Sausage. The internet erupted in a flurry of comments, with some expressing curiosity, others disgust, and a few claiming they’d give it a try ‘just for the experience’.

Gelateria San Marco played it straight, sharing mouth-watering (or perhaps stomach-churning) images of the ‘sausage’ ice cream on their social media platforms. The post was accompanied by a detailed description: “A symphony of savory and sweet, our Sausage ice cream is made with a secret blend of spices, slow-cooked in our traditional Maltese manner, then frozen into a creamy delight.”

Of course, it was all a hoax. On April 1st, the gelateria revealed the joke, sharing a video of their staff laughing over the prank. They did, however, promise to introduce a new, more palatable flavor the following month. Phew!

Paws for Thought: Malta’s First Dog Lane

In a move that had dog lovers wagging their tails, the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) announced the creation of Malta’s first designated dog lane. The lane, they claimed, would run along the Sliema Promenade, allowing dogs to enjoy the scenic views without disturbing other beachgoers.

The MTA shared a mock-up image of the lane, complete with dog-friendly signage and even a miniature doggy water fountain. The announcement sparked a flurry of excitement, with many Maltese eager to take their furry friends for a stroll along the new lane.

Alas, it was not to be. On April 1st, the MTA confessed the prank, but not before encouraging pet owners to continue advocating for more dog-friendly spaces around the island. A noble cause indeed, even if the Sliema lane was just a joke.

Malta’s First Ever Time Travel Tour

History buffs were left scratching their heads when local tour operator, Malta History Tours, announced their newest offering – a time travel tour. The tour, they claimed, would take visitors back to Malta’s historic periods, from the Neolithic era to the Knights of St. John.

The tour operator shared a video of their ‘time machine’, a converted old bus adorned with futuristic gadgets. They even provided a detailed itinerary, complete with ‘time portals’ and ‘historical reenactments’.

Needless to say, it was all a ruse. On April 1st, Malta History Tours revealed the joke, but not before receiving a surge of bookings for their ‘time travel’ tours. They’ve since been inundated with requests to make the tours a reality. Who knows? Maybe next year’s April Fools’ prank will be a real-life time machine!

April Fools’ Day may be over, but the spirit of creativity and fun it brings lives on. So, keep your eyes peeled for next year’s crop of Maltese pranks. And remember, if it sounds too good (or too bizarre) to be true, it probably is!
