Malta’s Volunteers Get Safety Boost with Free Training
Volunteers Step Up, Skills Up: Free Health & Safety Training Rolls Out
Picture this: A bustling St. Julian’s street, volunteers from various NGOs huddled around tables, not for a fundraiser, but for a different kind of empowerment – free health and safety training. This isn’t just a scene, it’s a shift happening across Malta, with thousands of volunteers upping their game, thanks to a novel initiative.
Why This Matters
Malta’s volunteer sector is thriving, with over 40,000 individuals giving their time and skills. Yet, until recently, there was no standardized health and safety training for these unsung heroes. Enter the Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector (MCVS) and the Health and Safety Authority (HSA), who joined forces to change that.
“Volunteers are the backbone of our community. They deserve to be safe and equipped while they’re making a difference,” says Dr. Abigail Mamo, Executive Director at MCVS.
What’s on the Menu?
The training covers a broad spectrum, from basic first aid to fire safety, manual handling, and even mental health awareness. It’s not just about ticking boxes; it’s about empowering volunteers to handle real-life situations with confidence.
“We’re not just teaching them how to react in an emergency,” explains HSA’s Chief Executive, Elaine Camilleri. “We’re equipping them with the skills to prevent incidents from happening in the first place.”
Local Impact
From the busy streets of Valletta to the quieter corners of Gozo, this initiative is making waves. NGOs like the Red Cross, Malta Hospice, and Din l-Art Ħelwa have already seen their volunteers benefit from the training.
Take the case of a volunteer at the Malta Community Chest Fund. After completing the manual handling course, she was able to assist a person with disabilities more safely and confidently. “It’s not just about protecting ourselves,” she says, “it’s about protecting those we serve.”
How to Get Involved
If you’re a volunteer or an NGO, the training is free and easily accessible. Just visit the MCVS website or contact them directly to sign up. No prior experience is needed, just a willingness to learn and make a difference.
As Dr. Mamo puts it, “This isn’t just about adding another skill to your resume. It’s about making our community stronger, safer, and more resilient.”
So, whether you’re a seasoned volunteer or just starting out, consider this your call to action. Step up, skill up, and let’s make Malta a safer place, one volunteer at a time.
