TOI TOI Easter Concert Brings ‘Movie Magic’ to Teatru Manoel

Lights, Camera, Action! TOI TOI Easter Concert Brings ‘Movie Magic’ to the Manoel

Imagine this: the grand stage of the Teatru Manoel, Malta’s oldest working theatre, transformed into a silver screen. The TOI TOI Easter Concert promises just that, as it brings a cinematic experience to life this April. But how did this unique collaboration between TOI TOI and the Teatru Manoel come about, and what can audiences expect from this ‘Movie Magic’ concert?

From Cinema to Concert Hall

The brainchild of TOI TOI’s artistic director, Kevin Abela, the ‘Movie Magic’ concert is a labour of love that combines Abela’s passion for film scores and classical music. “I’ve always been fascinated by the power of film music to evoke emotions,” Abela explains. “I wanted to bring that magic to the concert hall, to give audiences an immersive experience that transcends the screen.”

The Teatru Manoel, with its rich history and acoustics, was the obvious choice for this cinematic concert. Built in 1731, the theatre has hosted countless performances, from opera to drama. But this will be the first time it plays host to a concert entirely dedicated to film music.

A Symphony of Cinema

So, what can audiences expect from this unique concert? The ‘Movie Magic’ programme is a whistle-stop tour of cinema history, from the golden age of Hollywood to contemporary blockbusters. Expect to hear iconic themes from films like ‘Star Wars’, ‘Jurassic Park’, ‘E.T.’, and ‘The Lord of the Rings’, performed by the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra and the TOI TOI Chamber Choir.

Abela promises a visual feast to accompany the music. “We’ll be projecting film clips and behind-the-scenes footage on a large screen above the orchestra,” he reveals. “It’s not just about hearing the music – it’s about seeing it, feeling it, being part of the story.”

And for those who love a good Easter egg, Abela hints at a few surprises. “We’ve got some fun references to Easter films woven into the programme,” he teases. “I don’t want to give too much away, but let’s just say, you might want to keep an eye out for any rabbits…”
