Local Drug Lord Sentenced: 10 Years in Jail, €22k Fine

In a significant blow to Malta’s drug trafficking scene, a local court has sentenced a prominent figure to 10 years in jail and a hefty €22,000 fine. The sentencing comes after a complex investigation that uncovered a sophisticated drug trafficking and money laundering operation.

From the Streets of Birkirkara to the High Court

The convicted, a 45-year-old Birkirkara resident, was found guilty of trafficking cocaine and laundering the proceeds through a network of local businesses. The operation, which spanned over three years, saw the man importing drugs from abroad and distributing them across Malta.

Neighbours in the quiet Birkirkara street where the man lived described a sudden change in his lifestyle. “He used to drive a old, beat-up car,” one resident told Hot Malta, “then suddenly, he’s driving a brand new Mercedes.”

Unraveling the Web of Crime

The man’s downfall began when police, acting on a tip-off, raided his home in 2019. They found a stash of cocaine and €50,000 in cash. Further investigations led them to several businesses in Paceville and Sliema, which were used to launder the drug money.

“This was a complex operation,” a police spokesperson told Hot Malta. “The man had set up a network of shell companies and used fronts to hide his illegal activities.”

Justice Served, but the Fight Continues

The sentence sends a strong message to other drug traffickers operating in Malta. However, law enforcement agencies warn that the fight against drug trafficking is far from over.

“We’re seeing a shift in the way these operations are run,” the police spokesperson added. “They’re becoming more sophisticated, more international. But we’re also becoming more adept at tracking and disrupting them.”

In a call to action, the police spokesperson urged the public to report any suspicious activities. “Your tip-off could be the key to dismantling the next big operation,” they said.
