Mosta Residents Battle to Save ‘Bucolic Oasis’ from Football Pitch
Petition Launched as Residents Battle to Save ‘Bucolic Oasis’ from Football Pitch
Imagine waking up to the sight of rolling green hills, the scent of wild thyme, and the distant hum of bees. This is the reality for residents of Mosta, who are now fighting to protect their ‘bucolic oasis’ from being turned into a football pitch.
From Countryside to Sports Venue?
Plans are afoot to transform a stretch of ‘beautiful virgin land’ in Mosta into a football pitch. The land, currently a haven for wildlife and a breath of fresh air for locals, is set to be paved over to accommodate the growing demand for sports facilities in the area.
But the plans have sparked a backlash from residents, who have launched a petition to halt the project. “This land is a gem,” says Joseph Xuereb, a long-time Mosta resident. “It’s not just about the view, it’s about the biodiversity, the peace and quiet, the space for our children to play and explore.”
Petition Gathers Steam
The petition, launched on Change.org, has already gathered hundreds of signatures. It argues that the land should be protected as a public green space, rather than being given over to a private sports club.
“We’re not against sports or progress,” says Maria Camilleri, another Mosta resident and petition signer. “But this land is too precious to pave over. We need to protect our green spaces, not concrete them over.”
Adding weight to the residents’ argument is the fact that the land is part of a larger green corridor that connects Mosta to Mgarr. This corridor is home to a variety of wildlife, including several species of birds and butterflies.
Council Weighs In
The local council has been drawn into the debate, with some councillors supporting the residents’ petition, while others argue that the demand for sports facilities is too great to ignore.
“We understand the residents’ concerns,” says Councillor John Attard, who supports the petition. “But we also have a duty to provide for the sporting needs of our community. We’re looking at all options to try and find a solution that balances these two needs.”
What Next?
The petition is just one part of the residents’ campaign to save the land. They’re also planning a series of community events, including guided walks and birdwatching sessions, to highlight the beauty and importance of the area.
“We want to show people what we stand to lose if this land is concreted over,” says Xuereb. “And we want to show the council that there’s a lot of support for protecting this green space.”
As the debate continues, one thing is clear: the future of this ‘bucolic oasis’ hangs in the balance. But the residents of Mosta are determined to fight to protect it, one signature, one event, one voice at a time.
