Oil Slick or No Oil Slick? Malta’s Authorities Disagree
Oil Slick or No Oil Slick? A Tale of Two Reports
Standing on the bustling Sliema Promenade, you’d be forgiven for thinking the Mediterranean Sea was as pristine as ever. But looks can be deceiving. A recent report by the Malta Environment and Resources Authority (MERA) has sparked a heated debate, claiming an oil slick off Malta’s coast. The Malta Maritime Authority (MMA), however, disagrees. So, what’s the truth in these murky waters?
MERA’s Oil Slick Alert
MERA’s report, issued earlier this month, raised alarm bells. It claimed to have detected an oil slick, around 10 nautical miles northwest of Marsaxlokk, Malta’s iconic fishing village. The slick, they said, was about 100 meters by 50 meters, potentially threatening local marine life and tourism.
Dr. Andreina Fenech, MERA’s director, was quick to react. “We’re taking this seriously,” she told Hot Malta. “We’ve alerted our counterparts in Italy and Libya, as the slick could’ve originated from any of these areas.”
The MMA’s Counterclaim
But the MMA wasn’t convinced. In a swift response, they dismissed MERA’s findings, claiming their own samples showed no traces of oil. Captain Andrew Agius, MMA’s director, was firm. “Our tests are conclusive. There’s no oil slick. We’re committed to keeping our waters clean and safe.”
The MMA’s stance was echoed by Malta’s Ministry for Gozo and Local Government, which oversees environmental issues. A spokesperson told us, “We’re confident in the MMA’s findings. There’s no cause for alarm.”
So, Who’s Right?
With two authoritative bodies at loggerheads, it’s hard to know what to believe. Some environmentalists, like Din l-Art Ħelwa‘s Dr. Mario Mifsud, are taking no chances. “We’re urging the public to report any unusual sightings or smells,” he said. “Better safe than sorry.”
Meanwhile, local fishermen are keeping a watchful eye. “We’ve seen nothing unusual,” said Marsaxlokk fisherman, Joseph Saliba. “But we’re keeping our ears to the ground, so to speak.”
Back in Sliema, the sea continues to sparkle under the sun. But beneath the surface, the debate rages on. One thing’s for sure – Malta’s waters are anything but calm right now.
