Żebbuġ Residents Battle to Save ‘Virgin Land’ from Football Pitch Plans
Residents Up in Arms: ‘Virgin Land’ Threatened by Football Pitch Plans
Imagine waking up every morning to the sight of lush greenery and the gentle rustling of leaves, only to find out that your ‘beautiful virgin land’ is under threat. This is the reality for residents of Żebbuġ, a picturesque village in Malta’s Northern Region, who have recently filed a petition against plans to build a football pitch on their doorstep.
From Green Oasis to Sports Arena?
The proposed site for the football pitch is a 1,200 square metre plot of land located just off Triq il-Kunsill, a quiet street lined with traditional Maltese houses. Residents argue that this land, currently untouched and teeming with native flora, is a vital green lung for the village. They fear that turning it into a sports arena will not only destroy the local ecosystem but also cause noise pollution and traffic congestion.
“This land is a sanctuary for birds and other wildlife,” says Joe Xuereb, a Żebbuġ resident and one of the petitioners. “We’ve seen hoopoes, kingfishers, and even the occasional wild cat. It’s a little piece of Malta’s rural heritage right in the heart of the village.”
Council’s Stance and the Petition Drive
The Żebbuġ Local Council has been pushing for the football pitch, arguing that the village lacks adequate sports facilities. However, residents contend that there are other, more suitable locations for the project. They have launched a petition, addressed to the council and the Ministry for the Environment, Sustainability, and Climate Change, urging them to reconsider the plans.
“We’re not against progress or the need for sports facilities,” explains Maria Azzopardi, another Żebbuġ resident. “But this land is too precious to be paved over. There are other plots in the village that are more suitable and less environmentally sensitive.”
As of now, the petition has gathered over 500 signatures, a significant number considering Żebbuġ’s population of around 2,500. The residents’ determination is evident in their words and actions. They have even organized clean-up drives to highlight the beauty and importance of the threatened land.
: The Fight Continues
With the petition handed in and the council yet to respond, the residents of Żebbuġ are bracing for a long fight. They are determined to protect their ‘beautiful virgin land’ and have vowed to explore all legal avenues if necessary.
“This is more than just a piece of land,” says Xuereb. “It’s a symbol of our village’s rural identity, and we’re not going to let it go without a fight.”
