Silent Altars: Easter Masses in Dubai Cancelled Amidst War Uncertainty

In the heart of Dubai, the usually bustling St. Mary’s Church stood silent and empty on Easter Sunday. The reason? A stark reminder of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, thousands of miles away. The Roman Catholic Church in Dubai, along with other Christian denominations, cancelled all Easter masses and services due to the war.

War’s Echo in the Gulf

While the war in Ukraine might seem far from the sun-kissed beaches and towering skyscrapers of Dubai, its impact is being felt strongly by the city’s large expat community, many of whom hail from Ukraine and Russia. The UAE, with its strategic location and diverse population, has always been a melting pot of cultures and a hub for international relations. Now, it finds itself caught in the crossfire of a global conflict.

Father Dr. Eugene CALEJA, parish priest of St. Mary’s Church, explained, “We felt it was our duty to stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine. Cancelling masses was a difficult decision, but we believed it was the right thing to do.”

Malta’s Connection

Malta, with its historic ties to the UAE, has also been closely watching the developments. The Maltese community in Dubai, though small, has been deeply affected. Malta’s Ambassador to the UAE, His Excellency Dr. Charles Saliba, echoed the sentiment of solidarity, “Malta stands with Ukraine. We hope for a swift and peaceful resolution to this crisis.”

Back in Dubai, the cancellation of Easter masses has left a void in the spiritual lives of many. However, it has also sparked conversations and acts of kindness. Many expats, regardless of their nationality, have come together to support each other and those affected by the war.

Father Eugene added, “Easter is about hope and renewal. While we can’t celebrate mass, we can still spread hope and love, especially during these challenging times.”
