Fire in St. Julian’s: Residents Rescued from Balconies
Balcony Rescues: Fire Engulfs St. Julian’s Apartment Block
As the sun set over St. Julian’s, the usually bustling tourist hub was suddenly filled with an eerie glow, not from the setting sun, but from a raging fire that engulfed an apartment block in the heart of the town.
Fire Breaks Out, Residents Trapped
The fire, which started around 8 PM on Tuesday, quickly spread through the six-story building located on Triq San Ġorġ Preca. Residents found themselves trapped, with no way out but to wait on their balconies for rescue. “I looked out my window and saw the whole building on fire,” said one resident, who wished to remain anonymous.
The Malta Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) was swift to respond, with firefighters from St. Julian’s, Sliema, and Msida stations rushing to the scene. They found a challenging situation – the fire had spread to multiple apartments, and residents were trapped on balconies, some even hanging from them, desperate for rescue.
Balcony Rescues and Evacuations
Firefighters, with the help of police and Civil Protection personnel, launched a daring rescue operation. Using ladders and ropes, they reached the balconies, helping residents down to safety. Videos and photos circulating on social media show firefighters cradling children and elderly residents in their arms as they lower them to safety.
One firefighter, who wished to remain anonymous, described the scene as “chaotic but controlled.” He praised his colleagues, saying, “We’ve trained for this, and when it happens, you just do what you’re trained to do. It’s a relief to see everyone safe.”
Aftermath and Investigation
By 11 PM, the fire was under control, but not before causing significant damage to the building. The MFRS is still investigating the cause of the fire, but initial reports suggest it may have started in a ground-floor apartment.
Residents were taken to a nearby community center, where they were provided with blankets, food, and water. Many were left with nothing but the clothes on their backs. The Maltese Red Cross has set up a fund to help those affected.
St. Julian’s Mayor, Gino Portelli, visited the scene, expressing his relief that no lives were lost. He praised the firefighters, saying, “Their quick response and bravery saved many lives tonight.”
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of fire safety. The MFRS urges all residents to ensure their homes have working smoke detectors and to always have an escape plan in case of a fire.
