Fire Rescuers Save St. Julian’s Residents from Balconies

Balcony Rescue: Fire Engulfs St. Julian’s Apartment Block

In the early hours of Tuesday morning, residents of a five-storey apartment block in St. Julian’s were jolted awake by the chilling crackle of flames. The fire, which broke out on the third floor, quickly engulfed the building, leaving many residents trapped on their balconies, high above the bustling streets below.

Chaos Erupts as Fire Spreads Rapidly

The fire, reported around 2:30 AM, spread rapidly through the building, fueled by strong winds that whipped through the narrow streets of this popular Malta tourist hub. Panicked residents, many still in their nightclothes, rushed to their balconies, the only escape route as smoke and flames filled the corridors.

Emergency services, including the Malta Fire Rescue Service and Civil Protection Department, rushed to the scene. They found a chaotic scene, with residents huddled on balconies, some dangling from railings, desperate for rescue. The fire, visible from nearby Spinola Bay, cast an eerie glow over the usually vibrant area.

Rescue Operations: A Race Against Time

Firefighters, with the help of Civil Protection officers, launched a daring rescue operation. Using ladders and cherry pickers, they climbed to the balconies, rescuing residents one by one. The operation was a race against time, with the fire threatening to engulf the entire building and the wind making conditions treacherous.

One rescued resident, Maria, a 55-year-old Maltese woman, described her ordeal. “I woke up to the sound of explosions. I thought it was a dream, but then I smelled the smoke. I ran to the balcony, and there were flames everywhere. I was terrified.”

Aftermath: Investigation and Support for Victims

By dawn, the fire was under control, but not before causing significant damage to the building. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but early indications suggest it may have started in a third-floor apartment.

The rescued residents were taken to Mater Dei Hospital for treatment of minor injuries and smoke inhalation. They were also provided with temporary accommodation by the Malta Red Cross, which has set up a relief fund for the victims.

St. Julian’s Mayor, Gino De Marco, visited the scene and expressed his gratitude to the emergency services. “This could have been a tragedy. The swift response of our firefighters and Civil Protection officers saved many lives tonight.”

As the sun rose over Spinola Bay, the full extent of the damage became apparent. The once vibrant apartment block now stands charred and silent, a stark reminder of the night’s events. But amidst the devastation, there’s hope. Hope that the residents, who have lost so much, can rebuild their lives. And hope that the spirit of community, so evident in the rescue efforts, will continue to support them in the days ahead.
