Malta: Popular Glassware Recalled Over Health Risks

Clink, Clank, or Danger? Local Shops Pull Popular Glassware

Imagine this: You’re at your favourite Paceville bar, Cheers, raising a toast with friends. The glass you’re clinking is part of a collection that’s now making headlines, but not for the reasons you’d expect. It’s been recalled due to health risks.

Yes, you read that right. The decorative drinking glasses you might have at home or seen in local bars and cafes are under scrutiny. The Maltese Health Authorities, in collaboration with the European Commission, have issued a recall for these glasses due to the presence of high levels of lead and cadmium.

What’s the Fuss About?

Lead and cadmium, you ask? These are heavy metals that can pose serious health risks, especially when they leach into food and drinks. They can cause kidney damage, bone damage, and even harm the nervous system. In children, high exposure can lead to learning difficulties and delayed growth.

So, when these metals were found in the decorative glassware, it was a red flag. The glasses in question are those with a coloured, glittery, or metallic finish. They were imported from China and have been sold locally under various brands.

Where to Find the Recalled Glasses

If you’re wondering if you have any of these glasses at home, here’s what to look out for. They often have a metallic sheen, glitter, or a colourful, marbled effect. They might also have a ‘Made in China’ label. You can find them in many local shops, including some popular ones like Bay Street Shopping Centre and Tigne Point.

But don’t worry, you don’t have to throw them out just yet. The Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority (MCCAA) advises that you stop using them immediately. They’re currently working on a recall process, so keep an eye out for updates.

In the meantime, stick to plain, clear glassware. Your health is worth more than a bit of sparkle on your glass.

What Now?

If you’ve found any of the recalled glasses at home, don’t panic. Contact the MCCAA on +356 2329 6000 or email them at info.mccaa@mccaa.org.mt. They’ll guide you on what to do next.

Let’s stay safe, Malta. After all, our health is our greatest wealth.
