The Mare Nubium, a Russian-owned, Panamanian-flagged tanker, set sail from Libya with a cargo of fuel oil. But instead of reaching its destination in Turkey, it began drifting aimlessly, its crew seemingly vanished without a trace. The Libyan coastguard, initially in pursuit, lost track of the vessel, and it was Malta’s turn to step in.

Malta’s first attempt to tow the Mare Nubium back to Libya failed due to poor weather conditions.
