Off-Duty Cop Arrests Church Thief in Mdina

Off-Duty Cop’s Quick Thinking Nets Church Thief

In the heart of Mdina, a quiet Sunday afternoon was shattered by the sound of shattering glass. The historic church of St. Paul’s Cathedral had just become the latest target in a string of thefts plaguing Malta’s religious institutions.

Glass Shards and Empty Cases

Father Joseph, the cathedral’s priest, discovered the break-in. “I found glass shards on the floor and our display cases empty,” he recounted, his voice still echoing the shock. The thieves had made off with priceless artifacts, including a silver chalice donated by Grandmaster de Vilhena in the 1700s.

An Unlikely Hero

Little did the thieves know, they’d been witnessed by an off-duty police officer, Mario Azzopardi. Azzopardi was enjoying a rare day off, strolling through Mdina’s fortified walls. “I heard the noise, saw the broken window,” he said. Spotting a man darting away from the scene, Azzopardi’s instincts kicked in.

Azzopardi gave chase, his years of training pushing him to keep pace with the suspect. The thief, cornered in a narrow alley off Triq San Pawl, tried to fight back. But Azzopardi, undeterred, managed to subdue him until backup arrived.

Recovery and Reprieve

Thanks to Azzopardi’s quick thinking and bravery, the stolen artifacts were recovered. Inspector Ian Abdilla, leading the investigation, praised Azzopardi’s actions. “He’s a credit to the force,” Abdilla said, “His intervention not only recovered valuable historical pieces but also prevented further thefts.”

Father Joseph, relieved, expressed his gratitude. “We’re thankful for Officer Azzopardi’s bravery. These artifacts are more than just items; they’re pieces of our history, our heritage.”

As for Azzopardi, he’s back on duty, his heroic act a reminder that even off the clock, Malta’s police force is always on guard.
