Dubai’s Easter Silence: War Cancels Masses

Silent Altars: Easter in Dubai as War Echoes Cancel Masses

In the heart of Dubai’s Jumeirah Beach Residence, the usually bustling St. Mary’s Catholic Church stands silent. Its grand doors, which would typically swing open to welcome thousands for Easter Mass, remain closed. The reason? A war raging thousands of miles away in Europe.

War’s Echo in the Gulf

The war in Ukraine has cast a long shadow, reaching even the sun-kissed beaches of Dubai. The UAE, like many other countries, has imposed sanctions on Russia, including a ban on Russian aircraft from its airspace. This has left Dubai’s Russian Orthodox community, who traditionally celebrate Easter with grand services at St. Mary’s, in limbo.

Father Christian, the parish priest, received the news with a heavy heart. “We understand the reasons behind the ban, but it’s a bitter pill to swallow,” he says, standing in the empty church, the echoes of his voice filling the void where hymns and prayers should be.

Malta’s Connection

Malta, with its strong Catholic roots and historical ties to the UAE, has a small but vibrant community in Dubai. Many Maltese expats have made Dubai their home, drawn by its economic opportunities and cosmopolitan lifestyle. For them, Easter is usually a time of joyous celebration, a chance to reconnect with their faith and their roots.

Maria, a Maltese teacher who has lived in Dubai for five years, is disappointed but understanding. “It’s tough, but we understand the bigger picture. We’ll make do with watching the Mass online from home,” she says, her voice tinged with a familiar Maltese lilt.

Adapting to Change

While Masses are cancelled, the spirit of Easter persists. The parish has shifted services online, with Father Christian leading prayers from an empty church, his voice streaming into homes across the city. The Russian community has rallied, organising small, private services in homes, adhering to the UAE’s strict COVID-19 guidelines.

Back at St. Mary’s, Father Christian looks out at the empty pews, a sense of determination in his eyes. “Easter is about hope and renewal. We may not be together in person, but our faith unites us. We’ll celebrate again, together, soon.”
