Dubai’s Maltese Community Marks Easter in Isolation
Silent Altars: Dubai’s Maltese Community Marks Easter in Isolation
In the heart of Dubai’s bustling Jumeirah Beach Residence, the usually vibrant St. Mary’s Church stands silent and empty. The grand Easter Masses that typically draw thousands of Maltese expats and locals alike have been cancelled this year, not due to the pandemic’s resurgence, but because of a war thousands of miles away.
From Valletta to Dubai: A Community in Limbo
The cancellation of Easter Masses in Dubai’s Maltese community is a stark reminder of the global impact of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. With Ukraine’s ambassador to the UAE, Serhii Vysotskyi, requesting that churches in the UAE refrain from holding services to avoid provoking Russia, Maltese expats in Dubai find themselves in a unique predicament.
Malta, with its historical ties to Ukraine, has been vocal in its support for the war-torn country. The Maltese government has imposed sanctions on Russia and provided humanitarian aid to Ukraine. This stance has put the Maltese community in Dubai, a city with significant Russian influence, in a delicate position.
Adapting to Adversity: Virtual Services and Private Prayers
Father Joe Borg, the parish priest of St. Mary’s Church, has been navigating these challenges with resilience. “We understand the gravity of the situation,” he says, “So, we’ve moved our services online. We’re also encouraging our community to pray privately at home, reflecting on the true meaning of Easter – hope amidst adversity.”
Malta-based Bishop Mario Grech has echoed this sentiment, urging Maltese expats to “pray for peace and unity, not just during Easter, but always.”
: Hope and Solidarity
Despite the cancellations, the Maltese community in Dubai remains united. They’re finding creative ways to celebrate Easter, from virtual family gatherings to quiet beachside picnics. They’re also rallying support for Ukraine, with many contributing to relief efforts.
As the sun sets on Dubai’s empty churches, the Maltese community looks ahead with hope. Hope for peace in Ukraine, hope for the return of communal worship, and hope for the day when they can celebrate Easter together again.
“Easter is about resurrection,” says Father Joe, “And like the phoenix, we too will rise from these challenges, stronger and more united than ever.”
