Zeppelin’s New Dawn: Malta Welcomes the First Commercial Airship
Malta, April 5, 2026 – From the bustling streets of Valletta to the quiet coves of Gozo, the island nation is abuzz with anticipation. Today marks a historic moment as the first commercial airship, the ‘Zepp’, gracefully descends onto the tarmac of Malta International Airport. But this isn’t your grandfather’s blimp. The ‘Zepp’ is a state-of-the-art, hybrid-electric airship, set to revolutionize air travel and tourism in the Mediterranean.
From Concept to Reality
The ‘Zepp’ is the brainchild of Maltese-American entrepreneur, Joseph Galea, who returned to his roots after making it big in Silicon Valley. Galea’s company, Airship Innovations, has spent the past five years developing this cutting-edge airship, combining the best of modern technology with the timeless elegance of airship design.
Galea, speaking to Hot Malta from the ‘Zepp’s’ control cabin, said, “Today is a dream come true. Malta is where my journey began, and it’s fitting that it’s also where the ‘Zepp’ takes flight.”
Zepp – A breakthrough for Maltese Tourism
The ‘Zepp’ is set to offer panoramic tours of the Maltese islands, with a capacity of 100 passengers. Its slow, steady flight ensures unparalleled views of the archipelago’s historic sites, coastal towns, and rural landscapes. The airship’s first route will take passengers from Malta International Airport, over the Three Cities, past the Grand Master’s Palace, and around the picturesque coastline of Gozo.
Tourism Minister, Michael Falzon, believes the ‘Zepp’ will attract a new wave of tourists to Malta. “This is more than just a new attraction. It’s a new way of experiencing our islands. We’re excited to see the impact it will have on our tourism industry,” he said.
Sustainable Skies
But the ‘Zepp’ isn’t just about style. It’s also about substance. Powered by a hybrid-electric engine, it’s significantly quieter and more environmentally friendly than traditional aircraft. Its slow speed and low altitude also mean it produces less turbulence, making for a smoother, more comfortable ride.
Airship Innovations has also committed to using the ‘Zepp’ for disaster relief and environmental monitoring missions, further cementing its role as a force for good in the skies.
As the sun sets over the Maltese islands, the ‘Zepp’ begins its maiden voyage. From the streets of Valletta to the rooftops of Mdina, eyes turn skyward, watching as a new chapter in Maltese aviation history takes flight.
Galea, looking out over the islands he loves, says, “This is just the beginning. The skies are no longer the limit. They’re the next frontier.”
