Il-Ħajja f’Għawdex: A March Muster of Gozo’s Culinary Delights
As the sun begins to set over the Mediterranean, painting the skies above Ċittadella in hues of orange and pink, the scent of freshly cooked food wafts through the air. It’s the first Friday of March, and Il-Ħajja f’Għawdex is back, transforming Gozo’s capital into a bustling food lover’s paradise.
What is Il-Ħajja f’Għawdex?
Il-Ħajja f’Għawdex, or ‘Life in Gozo’ in English, is a monthly food market that takes place in Ċittadella. It’s a celebration of local produce, traditional Gozitan cuisine, and the island’s vibrant food scene. The market is a labour of love, organised by the Għawdex Local Council and supported by local farmers, producers, and chefs.
March’s Mouthwatering Lineup
March’s edition of Il-Ħajja f’Għawdex promises a feast for the senses. Kicking off the month’s culinary journey is Il-Majjistral Restaurant, known for its innovative take on traditional Gozitan dishes. They’ll be serving up their signature ‘Grilled Octopus with Gozitan Honey and Lemon Dressing’, a must-try for seafood lovers.
No visit to Il-Ħajja f’Għawdex is complete without sampling the island’s famous Gozitan Cheese. This month, look out for Ta’ Mena Farm‘s stall, where you can taste their award-winning cheeses and learn about the traditional cheesemaking process.
For something sweet, don’t miss Il-Biskottina‘s stall. This local bakery is famous for its traditional Gozitan biscuits, or ‘biskottini’, which are perfect for dipping in a glass of local wine.
More Than Just Food
Il-Ħajja f’Għawdex is about more than just food. It’s a chance to connect with the local community, learn about Gozitan culture, and support local producers. The market is held in the historic Ċittadella, a fortified city that dates back to the medieval period, providing a stunning backdrop to the evening’s festivities.
This month, the market will also feature live music from local artists, adding to the lively atmosphere. And, as always, there will be plenty of opportunities to pick up local produce and artisan products to take home.
So, whether you’re a Gozitan local or a visitor to the island, Il-Ħajja f’Għawdex is an unmissable event. It’s a chance to taste the best of what Gozo has to offer, all in one place. See you there!
