Gżira Pedestrian Accident: Driver Fined €2,500 for Injuries

It was a typical evening in the bustling town of Gżira. The sun was setting, casting a warm glow over the busy streets. Suddenly, the peaceful scene was shattered by the screech of brakes and the thud of impact. A pedestrian lay injured on the road, the victim of a car accident at the intersection of Triq San Gwann and Triq il-Kbira.

Accident Details Emerge

The incident, which occurred last Tuesday, has left the local community shaken. Eyewitnesses reported that the driver, a 35-year-old man from Msida, was speeding when he struck the pedestrian, a 55-year-old woman from Gżira. The woman suffered serious injuries and was rushed to Mater Dei Hospital, where she remains in stable condition.

The driver was arrested at the scene and later charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving. During the court hearing yesterday, the prosecution presented evidence that the driver was exceeding the speed limit by over 20 km/h. The court also heard that the driver had been using his mobile phone at the time of the accident.

Court Imposes Heavy Fine and Ban

In his ruling, the magistrate described the driver’s actions as “irresponsible and reckless.” He imposed a €2,500 fine and a one-year driving ban. The driver was also ordered to pay €5,000 in compensation to the victim.

The magistrate’s decision has been welcomed by local residents and pedestrian advocacy groups. “This sends a strong message that reckless driving will not be tolerated,” said a spokesperson for the Malta Road Safety Council. “We hope that this will serve as a deterrent to other drivers.”

Call for Safer Streets

The accident has reignited calls for improved road safety in Gżira and other urban areas. Local councillor, Joseph Muscat, has called for urgent action. “We need to see more traffic calming measures, better pedestrian crossings, and stricter enforcement of speed limits,” he said.

In the meantime, residents are urging drivers to take extra care, especially in busy areas like Triq il-Kbira. “We all need to do our part to keep our streets safe,” said one resident. “That means driving carefully and looking out for pedestrians.”

As the sun sets on another day in Gżira, the community reflects on the accident and the lessons it holds. The road to recovery for the injured woman is long, but the community stands united in its commitment to safer streets.
