Malta Mourns: Graziella Castillo, Agenzija Appoġġ Director, Dies at 47
In the heart of Malta’s capital, Valletta, the bustling Republic Street fell silent today as news of Graziella Castillo’s passing spread. The 47-year-old, known for her unwavering dedication and warmth, was more than just the director of Agenzija Appoġġ; she was a beacon of hope for many in Malta’s vulnerable communities.
From Social Worker to Director
Graziella’s journey began in the corridors of the Social Work Department, University of Malta. She graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, her eyes sparkling with ambition and a deep-seated desire to make a difference. Her career blossomed from there, her passion for her work evident in every interaction.
She joined Agenzija Appoġġ in 2008, climbing the ranks to become the agency’s director in 2017. Under her leadership, Agenzija Appoġġ expanded its services, reaching out to more individuals and families in need. She was instrumental in implementing the ‘Family Budgeting Scheme’, providing financial assistance to low-income households.
Leaving a Legacy in Malta’s Social scene
Graziella’s impact was felt far beyond the walls of Agenzija Appoġġ. She was a vocal advocate for the vulnerable, her voice echoing through Parliament as she testified before the Social Affairs Committee. She was a regular at the Council of Europe’s Group of Experts on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings, representing Malta’s commitment to combating human trafficking.
Her legacy lives on in the lives she touched. In the words of a beneficiary, “She was more than a director; she was a guardian angel, a beacon of hope in our darkest hours.”
Flags flew at half-mast today, not just in Valletta, but across Malta and Gozo. The outpouring of grief was a testament to the love and respect Graziella commanded. As we bid her farewell, we remember her not with tears, but with smiles, for she left us with more joy than sorrow.
Rest in peace, Graziella. Your legacy continues in the lives you touched, the policies you shaped, and the hearts you warmed.
