Relief in Rabat: Missing Man Found After Week-Long Search

In the heart of Rabat, a town known for its ancient history and narrow, winding streets, a sense of relief washed over the community today. The man who had been missing for a week, 65-year-old Joseph Xuereb, was found safe and sound. The search, which had captivated the island nation, came to an end when a local resident spotted him near the ancient Roman Villa in Rabat.

Search Unfolds Across Malta

Xuereb, a retired history teacher, was last seen leaving his home in Rabat’s Old Town on the morning of March 15. His family raised the alarm when he didn’t return home or answer his phone. The search, which began as a local effort, quickly escalated to involve police, volunteers, and even the Civil Protection Department.

The search party scoured the streets of Rabat, expanding their efforts to nearby towns like Dingli and Siggiewi. They checked parks, gardens, and even the ancient megalithic temples that dot the Maltese countryside. The Maltese public joined in, sharing posts on social media and keeping an eye out for any sign of Xuereb.

Community Comes Together

Xuereb’s disappearance sparked a wave of concern and solidarity in the close-knit Maltese community. Neighbors and strangers alike joined the search, guided by a shared sense of responsibility and compassion. The local council set up a command center, coordinating efforts and providing updates to the public.

“It’s been a tough week,” said Maria Camilleri, a Rabat resident who had been volunteering daily. “But seeing everyone come together like this, it gives you hope. It’s what makes Malta so special.”

Xuereb Found Near Roman Villa

It was Maria’s neighbor, 72-year-old Anthony Borg, who spotted Xuereb near the Roman Villa in Rabat. “I was walking my dog when I saw him sitting on a bench, looking a bit lost,” Borg said. “I recognized him from the posters. I called out to him, and he looked up, relieved to see someone he knew.”

Xuereb was taken to Mater Dei Hospital for a check-up, where he was found to be in good health, albeit a bit dehydrated and confused. His family, who had been by his side since his discovery, expressed their gratitude to the community for their support and efforts.

“We can’t thank everyone enough,” said Xuereb’s daughter, Michelle. “The way the community rallied around us, it’s been incredible. We’re just so happy to have him back home.”
