Scottish Harmony Echoes in Vittoriosa’s Historic Church

Imagine the scene: a cool Maltese evening, the sun dipping below the Three Cities’ skyline, and the ancient walls of St. Lawrence Collegiate Church in Vittoriosa echoing with the harmonious voices of a Scottish choir. This isn’t a dream sequence, but a reality set to unfold this October as the renowned Glasgow Phoenix Choir graces our shores.

From Glasgow to Vittoriosa: A Musical Journey

The Glasgow Phoenix Choir, established in 1951, is no stranger to international stages. Yet, their upcoming performance at St. Lawrence Collegiate Church marks their first-ever appearance in Malta. The choir, comprising around 100 voices, will be led by their musical director, Michael Bawtree, who promises a captivating programme spanning classical, sacred, and popular music.

For the choir, Vittoriosa holds a special allure. “We’re thrilled to perform in such a historic and beautiful setting,” says Bawtree. “The church’s acoustics are legendary, and we can’t wait to fill it with our music.”

Vittoriosa: A Symphony of History and Culture

Vittoriosa, or Birgu as locals call it, is a symphony of history and culture. This fortified city, one of Malta’s Three Cities, has witnessed centuries of maritime history. Today, it’s a treasure trove of architectural gems, including the 12th-century St. Lawrence Collegiate Church, where the choir will perform.

Rev. Dr. Joseph Borg, parish priest of Vittoriosa, welcomes the choir’s visit. “We’re excited to host the Glasgow Phoenix Choir. Their performance will not only enrich our cultural scene but also bring our community together,” he says.

Mark Your Calendars: A Night of Musical Magic

The concert, titled “A Scottish Journey,” is set for October 23rd at 7:30 PM. Tickets are €15 and can be purchased online or at the door. The programme includes a mix of classical pieces, Scottish folk songs, and popular numbers, promising a night of musical magic.

So, mark your calendars, Vittoriosa residents and music lovers alike. This October, let’s welcome the Glasgow Phoenix Choir and celebrate the universal language of music that transcends borders.
