Floating Beach Club Offends Comino’s Charm, e-NGOs Demand Removal

Floating Beach Club Offends Comino’s Pristine Charm, e-NGOs Insist on Removal

Imagine this: You’ve just stepped off the boat onto the powdery sands of Comino’s Blue Lagoon. The sun is high, the sea is crystal, and the only sound is the gentle lapping of waves against the shore. Now, picture a floating beach club, complete with DJ booth and neon lights, bobbing offshore. That’s the reality that’s got environmental NGOs up in arms.

Comino’s Unique Appeal Under Threat

Comino, the tiny island between Malta and Gozo, is renowned for its untouched beauty. Its clear waters and unspoiled landscapes draw thousands of tourists each year. But the recent installation of a floating beach club, dubbed ‘Floating Vibes’, has sparked controversy. Environmental groups argue that it’s a blight on the island’s pristine charm and a threat to its delicate ecosystem.

“Comino is a unique gem in the Mediterranean,” says Mark Sultana, director of Nature Trust (Malta). “It’s one of the few places where you can still find untouched nature. This floating club is a stark contrast to that, and it’s not something we want to see more of.”

Regulations Flouted, Say Critics

Critics point out that the club’s operators may have flouted regulations. The Environmental Protection Act prohibits the construction or modification of structures within 500 meters of the shore without an environmental impact assessment. the club’s generators and loud music could potentially disturb marine life and other beachgoers.

“We’ve received numerous complaints from tourists and locals alike,” says a spokesperson for the Malta Tourism Authority. “While we understand the need for businesses to thrive, we must also ensure that our natural beauty is preserved.”

The club’s operators, however, maintain that they have all necessary permits and that their presence has actually boosted tourism. “We’re providing a unique experience,” says a spokesperson. “We’re not causing any harm, and we’re bringing more visitors to Comino.”

Call for Immediate Removal

e-NGOs are calling for the immediate removal of the club. They’ve launched a petition, gathered thousands of signatures, and are pressing the authorities to enforce the regulations. “This is about more than just a beach club,” says Sultana. “It’s about setting a precedent for how we protect our natural heritage.”

The debate is far from over. As the summer season heats up, so does the controversy. One thing’s for sure: the future of Comino’s floating beach club will have far-reaching implications for how Malta balances tourism and environmental protection.
