Malta’s 82-Year-Old Film Debutante

From Valletta’s Streets to the Silver Screen: Meet Malta’s 82-Year-Old Film Debutante

In the heart of Valletta, under the shade of the Grandmaster’s Palace, you’ll find Joseph Xuereb. Not your typical pensioner, Joseph is gearing up for his film debut at the ripe age of 82. This is no small-town production; he’s set to star in The Malta Exchange, a major Hollywood film shooting right here in Malta.

From Valletta’s Streets to the Casting Call

Joseph’s journey to the big screen began on the bustling streets of Valletta. A retired mechanic, he’s a familiar face in the capital, known for his friendly demeanor and quick wit. His daily walks around the city led him to the film set of The Malta Exchange, where he struck up a conversation with the director, Christian Carion.

“I was just walking by, and I saw all the commotion,” Joseph recalls. “I stopped to chat with the director, and one thing led to another. Before I knew it, he offered me a role in the film!”

A Hollywood Production in Malta’s Backyard

The Malta Exchange is no ordinary film. Starring Mickey Rourke and John Malkovich, it’s a high-stakes thriller set against the backdrop of Malta’s historic sites. The film is a testament to Malta’s growing status as a major film destination, with its rich history, diverse landscapes, and attractive incentives for film productions.

Malta Film Commissioner, Jonathan Holmes, welcomes the influx of international productions. “Malta’s unique selling point is its versatility,” he says. “From ancient cities to modern architecture, we can double for almost any location. And with our experienced crew and attractive incentives, it’s no surprise that Hollywood is knocking on our door.”

Joseph Xuereb: Malta’s Newest Silver Screen Sensation

Joseph’s role in The Malta Exchange is that of a wise old Maltese man, a part he was born to play. Despite his lack of acting experience, his natural charisma and wealth of life experience make him a compelling screen presence.

“I’ve lived a long life, seen a lot, done a lot,” Joseph says with a chuckle. “I think that comes across on screen. I might not be a professional actor, but I’ve got plenty of stories to tell.”

His co-star, Mickey Rourke, has nothing but praise for Joseph. “He’s a natural,” Rourke says. “He brings an authenticity to the role that you just can’t teach. I’m learning a thing or two from him, that’s for sure.”

Joseph’s family and friends are thrilled about his newfound fame. His granddaughter, Maria, is particularly proud. “It’s incredible,” she says. “My grandpa has always been the life of the party, but now he’s the life of the film set too!”

Joseph’s advice to others looking to follow in his footsteps? “Be yourself, and don’t be afraid to chat with people. You never know where it might lead you.”

As for Joseph, he’s taking it all in his stride. “I’m just a guy from Valletta, living my best life,” he says with a smile. “And if that means being in a Hollywood film, well, who am I to argue?”

Keep an eye out for Joseph Xuereb in The Malta Exchange, set to hit cinemas next year. And who knows? You might just spot him on your next stroll through Valletta.
