Rabat Rejoices: Missing Man Found After Week-Long Search
Relief in Rabat: Missing Man Found After Week-Long Search
In the heart of Malta’s historic Rabat, a week-long search for missing man, Joseph Camilleri, came to a relieved end yesterday. The 72-year-old, known locally as ‘ Żeppi l-Għawdex’, was found safe and sound in a small cave near the ancient catacombs, sparking joy among his family and the close-knit community.
Vanishing Act in Rabat
Joseph Camilleri’s disappearance on the 12th of May through the quiet streets of Rabat. The retired mason, known for his warm smile and quick wit, had stepped out of his Strait Street home one evening, leaving behind his beloved cat, Max, and his usual routine. When he didn’t return the following day, his family raised the alarm.
Rabat, with its labyrinthine streets and hidden corners, was suddenly abuzz with worry. Neighbours, many of whom had known Żeppi since childhood, shared concerns on social media. The local council offered a €5,000 reward for information leading to his safe return. Yet, despite the collective effort, days passed with no sign of the missing man.
The Search Intensifies
As days turned into a week, the search for Żeppi expanded. Police, volunteers, and even cadaver dogs combed the streets, alleyways, and open spaces of Rabat and its neighbouring towns. The Malta Diving School offered their services, scouring the nearby sea and coastline. The community rallied, with many taking to social media to share memories and appeals for information.
Żeppi’s niece, Maria Camilleri, spoke to Hot Malta about the family’s ordeal. “We were worried sick,” she said, “but we never lost hope. The community’s support was incredible. It felt like everyone in Rabat was looking out for him.”
Found in a Hidden Haven
It was a local boy, 12-year-old Matthew Azzopardi, who finally solved the mystery. While exploring the area around the Roman Villa, he stumbled upon a small, hidden cave. Inside, he found Żeppi, disoriented but otherwise unharmed, surrounded by empty water bottles and a makeshift bed of straw.
Matthew rushed back to his parents, who immediately alerted the police. Within minutes, Żeppi was found and rushed to Mater Dei Hospital for a check-up. Doctors confirmed he was dehydrated but otherwise in good health, given his ordeal.
When asked why he hadn’t called out for help, Żeppi simply smiled and said, “I was waiting for the right person to come along. I knew someone would find me.”
Żeppi was reunited with his family and Max, the cat, at his Strait Street home yesterday evening. The community of Rabat breathed a collective sigh of relief, celebrating the safe return of one of their own.
In a statement, Police Commissioner Lawrence Cutajar praised the community’s involvement in the search. “The power of community spirit is evident in this case,” he said. “We thank everyone who assisted in the search and hope this serves as a reminder of out for each other.”
As for Żeppi, he’s taking it all in his stride. “It was an adventure,” he chuckled, “but I’m glad to be home. Now, where’s that cat of mine?”
