Rabat Resident Found Safe After Week-Long Search
Relief in Rabat: Missing Man Found After Week-Long Search
In the heart of Malta’s historic Rabat, a week-long search for a missing man ended yesterday with a sigh of relief. Joseph Vella, a 72-year-old Rabat resident, was found safe and sound, putting an end to the community’s collective worry.
Vella’s Disappearance Sparks Concern
Vella, a retired mechanic known for his daily walks around the ancient streets of Rabat, was last seen on the evening of March 15th. His family raised the alarm the following day when he didn’t return home. The police, along with volunteers from the local community, launched a search operation that scoured the narrow streets and historic sites of Rabat and its surroundings.
“We knew something was wrong when he didn’t come home,” said Vella’s daughter, Maria. “He’s always been so punctual, so reliable. We knew we had to act fast.”
The Search: From St. Paul’s Grotto to the Wignacourt Museum
The search party started at Vella’s home in Triq l-Għar il-Kbir, a narrow street leading up to the ancient Roman Villa in Rabat. They combed through the popular tourist spots like St. Paul’s Grotto and the Wignacourt Museum, checking if Vella had perhaps wandered off and lost track of time. Flyers were distributed, and social media posts shared his photo, appealing for any information that could lead to his whereabouts.
Volunteers also checked the quiet, less-trodden paths around the Mdina Dungeons and the ancient Roman Villa, places Vella was known to frequent. “He loved history,” Maria said, “He could spend hours talking about the Roman era.”
Vella Found Near the San Antonio Church
After a week of tireless searching, Vella was finally found on Tuesday afternoon, sitting on a bench near the San Antonio Church in Rabat. He was dehydrated and disoriented but otherwise unharmed. The church, a short walk from Vella’s home, was one of the last places the search party had checked.
“We can’t thank the community enough,” Maria said, her voice filled with gratitude. “The police, the volunteers, everyone who shared our posts and kept an eye out for Dad. We’re so lucky to live in a community that cares so much.”
The police have attributed Vella’s disappearance to a momentary confusion, possibly triggered by his medication. They remind the public to keep an eye on elderly relatives and neighbors, especially those with health conditions that could affect their memory or cognition.
As for Vella, he’s back home, surrounded by his loving family. “He’s resting now,” Maria said with a smile. “And we’re making sure he doesn’t go anywhere without us.”
