Rabat Residents Rejoice as Missing Man Found

Relief in Rabat: Missing Man Found After Week-long Search

In the heart of Malta’s historic Rabat, a week-long search for a missing man ended on a hopeful note yesterday. Joseph ‘Joe’ Camilleri, a 65-year-old local resident, was found safe and sound, sparking relief and joy among his family and the close-knit community.

Vanishing Act in the Silent City

Joe Camilleri, a retired historian known for his encyclopedic knowledge of Rabat’s winding streets and ancient history, was last seen on the evening of October 15. He had stepped out of his apartment in Triq San Pawl, a narrow lane tucked between the St. Paul’s Cathedral and the ancient Roman villas, and hadn’t returned. His worried family reported him missing the next day.

Rabat, the ‘Silent City’ that stands in the shadow of Mdina, is a labyrinth of quiet streets and hidden corners. It’s a place where neighbors know each other, and a missing person is quickly noticed. Yet, Joe’s disappearance left the community baffled and concerned. “It’s not like Joe to vanish like this,” said his neighbor, Maria Grech, who has known him for decades.

Community Comes Together

As days passed without a trace of Joe, the community rallied around his family. Neighbors, friends, and even strangers joined forces to search for him. They scoured Rabat’s streets, checked with local hospitals, and shared his photo on social media, reaching thousands of people across Malta.

Local councils, including the Rabat Local Council and the Mdina Council, offered their support. The Police, with their expertise and resources, took the lead in the search, but the community’s involvement was invaluable. “We couldn’t have done this without the community’s help,” said Insp. Joe Muscat, leading the search operation.

A Happy Ending in St. Agatha’s Crypt

On the evening of October 22, a breakthrough came when a group of volunteers searching the crypts beneath St. Agatha’s Church found Joe. He was disoriented but unharmed, having spent the past week in the labyrinthine crypts, unable to find his way out.

Rescued and reunited with his family, Joe was taken to Mater Dei Hospital for observation. His daughter, Michelle Camilleri, expressed her gratitude to the community and the authorities: “We can’t thank everyone enough. We’re overwhelmed by the support we’ve received.”

For Rabat, the search for Joe was more than just a missing person case. It was a testament to the community’s resilience and unity. It was a reminder that even in the ‘Silent City’, no one is truly alone.

As for Joe, he’s looking forward to getting back to his beloved Rabat, sharing his history, and maybe, just maybe, staying away from the crypts for a while.
