Rabat Residents Rejoice as Missing Man Found
Relief in Rabat: Missing Man Found After Week-Long Search
In the heart of Malta’s historic Rabat, a week-long search ended on a relieved note yesterday as 65-year-old Joseph Camilleri was found safe and sound. The retired mechanic, known affectionately as ‘ Żużu’ to the locals, was last seen leaving his apartment on Triq San Pawl in the early hours of Tuesday, March 15.
Community Comes Together
The tight-knit community of Rabat rallied around Joseph’s family, with neighbours, friends, and even strangers joining the search. Volunteers scoured the narrow streets, ancient ruins, and lush countryside surrounding the town, their efforts coordinated by the local police and Joseph’s worried family.
“It was like a big family coming together,” said Maria, Joseph’s niece, who had been leading the search efforts. “We knew we had to find him, and we weren’t going to give up until we did.”
Breakthrough in the Case
The breakthrough came late on Monday evening when a local shopkeeper recognized Joseph from a shared photo on social media. He had been spotted near the ancient Roman Villa in San Pawl tat-Targa, a short distance from his home. Police quickly arrived at the scene and found Joseph, disoriented but otherwise unharmed, in an overgrown area behind the villa.
Dr. Matthew Pace, the attending physician at Mater Dei Hospital, where Joseph was taken for observation, attributed his good health to the mild winter and the community’s quick response. “He’s a bit dehydrated and has some minor scrapes, but he’s otherwise in good health. Given the circumstances, he’s quite lucky,” Dr. Pace said.
Lessons Learned and
While the community breathes a collective sigh of relief, the incident has raised awareness about in on vulnerable members of the community, especially the elderly. “We need to look out for each other, especially those who live alone,” said Rabat’s mayor, Dr. John Boxall. “Let’s turn this experience into a positive, by making sure no one falls through the cracks.”
Joseph’s family has expressed their gratitude to the community and the police for their tireless efforts. “We can’t thank everyone enough,” said Maria. “We’re just happy to have Żużu back home.”
As for Joseph, he’s looking forward to getting back to his routine, albeit with a newfound appreciation for his community. “I’ve always known Rabat was a special place,” he said with a smile, “but this just proves it.”
