UAE: Life Uninterrupted Despite Missile Attacks
Life in the UAE: Calm Amidst the Storm
In the heart of Dubai’s bustling Sheikh Zayed Road, the UAE’s embassy stands tall, a symbol of resilience amidst recent missile attacks. Despite the ominous threat, life in the United Arab Emirates continues, undeterred. This is the message echoed by the UAE’s ambassador to Malta, His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Al Remeithi.
Missile Attacks: A Blip, Not a Stop
On January 17, the UAE’s capital, Abu Dhabi, was struck by a series of missile attacks. The Houthi rebels in Yemen claimed responsibility, but the UAE maintains a stoic stance. “These incidents are unfortunate but will not disrupt our daily lives,” Ambassador Al Remeithi asserts. “The UAE is resilient, and we continue to function as normal.”
In Malta, the embassy reflects this resilience. Despite the distant threat, the embassy continues to operate, processing visas, and facilitating trade between Malta and the UAE. “Our work continues uninterrupted,” the ambassador assures. “We are here to serve our citizens and facilitate bilateral relations.”
Malta-UAE Relations: Unshaken
The UAE is Malta’s largest trading partner in the GCC, with bilateral trade reaching over €1 billion in 2020. Despite the recent attacks, this relationship remains strong. “Our ties are strong and based on mutual respect and cooperation,” Ambassador Al Remeithi says. “Economic relations are just one aspect. We also cooperate in areas like education, culture, and tourism.”
Malta’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Ian Borg, echoes this sentiment. “Malta’s relationship with the UAE is solid,” he says. “We condemn any act that threatens peace and stability, but we remain committed to our partnership.”
Life in the UAE: Business as Usual
In the UAE, life goes on. Schools remain open, businesses continue to operate, and malls bustle with shoppers. The UAE’s leadership has reassured its citizens, urging them to carry on with their daily lives. “We will not allow external forces to disrupt our progress,” UAE Vice President and Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, tweeted.
Malta-based UAE expats echo this sentiment. “Life here is normal,” says Maria, a Maltese teacher living in Dubai. “We’re not worried. We trust our leadership and know they’re doing everything to keep us safe.”
Back at the UAE embassy in Malta, Ambassador Al Remeithi reiterates this message. “The UAE will not be deterred by these attacks. We will continue to grow, to develop, and to maintain our strong relationships with our friends, including Malta.”
