Vittoriosa Band Honours Former Directors in Unique Evening
Vittoriosa Band to Pay Homage to Former Directors in Unique Musico-Literary Evening
Imagine the echo of brass instruments resonating through the historic streets of Vittoriosa. This is not a scene from a period drama, but a reality that will unfold on Saturday, 15th October, as the Vittoriosa Band hosts a unique musico-literary evening dedicated to its former directors. The event, ‘Melodies and Memoirs’, promises to be a captivating blend of music, literature, and history, all wrapped up in a typically Maltese package.
Honouring the Past, Celebrating the Present
The evening is a tribute to the band’s former directors, each of whom has left an indelible mark on the band’s history. From the humble beginnings in the late 19th century to the present day, the band’s directors have steered it through times of war, peace, and change. The event aims to honour their contributions and celebrate the band’s rich heritage.
“This is not just an evening of music,” says Joseph Camilleri, the current director of the Vittoriosa Band. “It’s a journey through time, a chance to remember those who came before us and shaped what we are today.”
Melodies and Memoirs: A Unique Blend
The event will take place at the historic Vittoriosa Band Club, located on the picturesque Triq il-Kbira, the main street of this fortified city. The evening will commence with a musical tribute to the former directors, with the band performing a selection of their favourite pieces. This will be interspersed with readings from memoirs and letters written by the directors themselves, offering a rare insight into the band’s history.
Among the pieces to be performed are ‘La Vittoriosa’, a march composed by former director Carmelo Pace, and ‘The Victors’, a piece written by another former director, Joseph Camilleri Snr. The evening will also include a premiere performance of a new composition, commissioned specifically for the event.
More Than Just an Evening of Music
What sets this event apart is its unique blend of music and literature. It’s a chance to look the personal stories of the band’s directors, to understand their motivations, their challenges, and their triumphs. It’s a chance to appreciate the band’s music in a new light, as a reflection of the times and the people who shaped it.
“We want people to leave this evening with a new appreciation for our band’s history,” says Camilleri. “We want them to understand that behind every note, there’s a story. Behind every story, there’s a person. And behind every person, there’s a piece of our collective heritage.”
So, mark your calendars for the 15th of October. Join the Vittoriosa Band for an evening that promises to be more than just music. It promises to be a journey through time, a celebration of the past, and a glimpse into the future of this historic band.
