Former Exec Sues Hili Companies for €500,000

Today, however, those walls echo with an unexpected legal battle. A former executive has filed a lawsuit against the Hili Companies, seeking over €500,000 in damages following his sudden dismissal.

Dr. Joseph Azzopardi, the former executive in question, spent over a decade climbing the ranks within the Hili Companies. From his early days in the sales department to his final role as Chief Commercial Officer, Azzopardi was instrumental in driving the group’s expansion into new markets. His sudden dismissal in late 2021, however, left him bewildered and aggrieved.

“I was given no reason for my dismissal,” Azzopardi told Hot Malta. “I was told to pack my things and leave. It was humiliating.” Azzopardi’s lawsuit alleges wrongful dismissal, breach of contract, and defamation, with damages estimated at over €500,000.

The Hili Companies, a sprawling conglomerate with interests in construction, property development, and hospitality, is no stranger to controversy. The group’s founder, Joseph Hili, is a prominent figure in Maltese business and politics, with his companies often at the center of public debates.

Hot Malta reached out to the Hili Companies for comment, but they declined to discuss the ongoing litigation. A spokesperson simply stated, “We are confident that the legal process will vindicate our position.”

Local legal experts have taken note of the high-profile case. Dr. Mario Mifsud, a labor law specialist, commented, “This case will set an important precedent for wrongful dismissal claims in Malta. The court will have to consider the severity of the alleged breaches and the impact on the plaintiff’s reputation and career.”

Dr. Mifsud also noted the potential implications for the Hili Companies, stating, “A large payout could send a strong message to employers about the importance of fair treatment and due process.”
