Malta’s Prisons: A Call for Dignity and Rehabilitation

Inside Malta’s Prisons: A Conversation with Alex Borg

Picture this: a prison cell in Malta, not as we’ve seen in Hollywood movies, but transformed into a space where dignity and rehabilitation go hand in hand. This is the vision of Alex Borg, a man who’s spent years advocating for prison reform on our islands.

Alex isn’t your typical activist. He’s a former prison officer, a man who’s seen firsthand the harsh realities of our correctional facilities. But he’s also a man who believes in change, in the power of rehabilitation, and in the dignity of every individual, no matter their past.

Rehabilitation: More Than Just a Word

For Alex, rehabilitation isn’t just a buzzword. It’s a process that starts the moment an individual steps into a prison cell. “It’s about giving people the tools they need to change their lives,” he says, sitting in his office, a stone’s throw from the Corradino Correctional Facility.

He envisions a system where education and vocational training are not afterthoughts, but core components. Where mental health services are readily available, and where prisoners are treated with the respect and dignity they deserve.

“We need to understand that prison is not just a place of punishment,” Alex explains. “It’s a place where people can learn, grow, and prepare for a life outside those walls.”

Challenges and Change

But changing the system isn’t easy. Alex acknowledges the challenges – overcrowding, understaffing, and a lack of resources. Yet, he remains optimistic. “Change takes time,” he says, “but it starts with small steps.”

One such step is the recent introduction of the ‘Open Prison’ concept at the Corradino Correctional Facility. Here, prisoners with a good conduct record can spend their days outside their cells, working, learning, and preparing for their eventual release.

“It’s a start,” Alex says, “but it’s just that – a start. We need to build on this, to expand these opportunities, to make our prisons true places of rehabilitation.”

The Road Ahead

Alex’s vision for Malta’s prisons is clear. It’s a place where dignity isn’t just a word, but a reality. Where rehabilitation isn’t a promise, but a guarantee. Where every individual, regardless of their past, is given the chance to change their future.

But he can’t do it alone. He needs your voice, your support, your advocacy. “This is our system,” he says, “our responsibility. We all have a part to play in making it better.”

So, what’s next? Alex is already planning his next steps – more meetings with officials, more awareness campaigns, more fights for change. Because for him, it’s not just about making prisons better. It’s about making people better.

And as he walks out of his office, past the walls of Corradino, he carries with him the hope that one day, every prison cell in Malta will be a place of dignity, of growth, of rehabilitation.
