Malta’s Resilience: Comfort or Complacency?

Malta’s Resilience: Comfort and Greed, or Grit and Gratitude?

Imagine, if you will, the bustling streets of Valletta on a typical summer’s day. The sun beats down relentlessly, as locals and tourists alike seek refuge in the shade, or the cool embrace of air-conditioned shops. This is Malta’s reality, our comfort and our challenge. But what happens when the comfort becomes complacency, and the challenge, resilience?

Comfort: Our Double-Edged Sword

Malta’s comforts are numerous. We enjoy one of the highest standards of living in the Mediterranean, with a strong economy, excellent healthcare, and a vibrant cultural scene. Our island is a melting pot of history, art, and cuisine, attracting millions of visitors each year. Yet, our comforts also breed complacency. We’ve become accustomed to our easy life, our ‘little bit of Britain’ in the Med. But is this comfort a blessing or a curse?

Take our water situation, for instance. Malta is one of the most water-scarce countries in the EU. Yet, we’ve become so accustomed to turning on the tap that we forget the value of water. We waste it, we pollute it, and we expect someone else to fix the problem. This is comfort breeding greed, not gratitude.

Greed: The Silent Killer of Resilience

Greed is a silent killer, slowly eroding our resilience. It’s in the overdevelopment of our coastal towns, the exploitation of our natural resources, and the prioritization of profit over sustainability. It’s in the ‘more, more, more’ mentality that’s led us to become one of the most densely populated countries in the world, with a housing crisis that shows no signs of abating.

But greed isn’t just about money. It’s about time, too. We’re greedy with our time, always rushing, always busy, always connected. We’ve lost the art of slowing down, of appreciating the present moment. This greed for more, faster, now, is making us less resilient, not more.

Resilience: Our Blind Spot

Resilience is our blind spot. We’re so focused on our comforts, on our greed, that we forget to cultivate the very thing that will help us weather the storms. We’re like the Phoenix, rising from the ashes of our past crises, only to forget the lessons we’ve learned and repeat the same mistakes.

Consider the COVID-19 pandemic. Malta’s response was swift and effective, with one of the highest vaccination rates in the world. But as the pandemic eases, we’re already slipping back into our old ways. We’re forgetting the importance of community, of solidarity, of looking out for one another. We’re forgetting the resilience we showed in the face of adversity.

We need to shift our focus. We need to appreciate our comforts, but not be defined by them. We need to check our greed, in all its forms, and cultivate gratitude instead. We need to see resilience not as a blind spot, but as a strength, a virtue to be nurtured and celebrated.

So, as we of life in Malta, let’s remember the words of Maltese poet Dun Karm Psaila: “Il-bniedem jkunx fil-ħajja” – Life is a struggle. Let’s embrace that struggle, with grit, with gratitude, with resilience.
