Malta’s The Way: Defying Curia Orders

Cura’s Defiance: Christian Group Stands Firm Against Curia Orders

In the heart of Malta, the ancient stone walls of the Old University Chapel in Republic Street, Valletta, have echoed with the whispers of defiance. The small Christian group, ‘The Way’, has found itself at the centre of a storm, refusing to comply with two separate orders issued by the Church’s Curia.

The group, known for its simple, spiritual services and community outreach, has been served with orders to cease its activities and dissolve. But instead of fading into the shadows, they’ve chosen to stand their ground. “We believe in what we’re doing,” says Maria, a long-time member. “We can’t just stop because someone tells us to.”

From Spiritual Haven to Storm Centre

The Old University Chapel has been The Way’s spiritual home for over a decade. Their services, held in Maltese and English, attract a diverse crowd, from young professionals to retirees. But in recent months, the group’s haven has become a storm centre.

In March, the Curia issued its first order, citing ‘doctrinal irregularities’ and ‘lack of canonical recognition’. The Way was given 30 days to comply. When they didn’t, a second order followed, this time threatening canonical penalties.

Defiance and Dialogue

The Way’s response? They held a public meeting, inviting everyone to share their thoughts and prayers. They’ve also launched a petition, gathering signatures from across Malta and Gozo. “We’re not against the Church,” explains Joseph, another member. “We just want to be heard, to find a way forward together.”

But the group’s defiance isn’t without its challenges. Some members have faced pressure from their parishes, while others have received anonymous threats. Yet, they remain undeterred. “We’re not doing anything wrong,” insists Maria. “We just want to live our faith in our own way.”

The Way’s story has sparked conversations across Malta. Some support their stance, others question their methods. But everyone agrees: this is a story worth watching.

As for The Way, they’re ready for whatever comes next. “We’ll continue to pray, to meet, to help our community,” says Joseph. “And we’ll keep talking, keep trying to find a way forward.”
