Car Battery Caper: Man Remanded Over Theft and Police Threats

Picture this: a quiet street in Msida, early morning. A man, later identified as 35-year-old Mark Xuereb, is spotted pushing a shopping trolley filled with something unusual – car batteries. Neighbours watch, bewildered, as he loads them into a van. Little did they know, this was just the start of a saga that would see Xuereb remanded in custody over theft and threats to police.

The Battery Bonanza

Xuereb’s spree began in late January, targeting parked cars in Msida and nearby Birkirkara. He’d strike in the dead of night, helping himself to batteries, leaving drivers stranded. It wasn’t until a victim’s dashcam captured Xuereb in action that police got their break. The footage, shared on social media, sparked a wave of tips that led police straight to Xuereb’s door.

Threats and Arrest

When officers arrived to question Xuereb, they found more than just stolen batteries. They discovered a cache of stolen goods, including electronics and tools, hidden in his apartment. But Xuereb wasn’t going down without a fight. He allegedly threatened the officers, earning himself a charge of criminal damage and threats to public officials, on top of the theft charges.

Magistrate Dr. Donatella Frendo Dimech was having none of it. She remanded Xuereb in custody, citing the seriousness of the charges and the risk of him repeating his crimes. Xuereb’s lawyer, meanwhile, argued that his client was remorseful and willing to cooperate. But the court wasn’t convinced, and Xuereb was sent to prison pending his next court appearance.

Lessons Learned

This case serves as a stark reminder to always lock your car and remove valuables. It’s also a testament to the power of community involvement. Neighbours’ vigilance and the victim’s dashcam footage were instrumental in catching Xuereb. So, keep your eyes peeled, Malta. You never know when you might be the key to solving a crime.

Next court appearance: April 2023. Stay tuned for updates.
