Car Battery Caper: Man Remanded Over Theft and Police Threats

In a scene straight out of a heist movie, a man was caught red-handed attempting to steal car batteries from a garage in Msida, only to turn around and threaten police officers when they arrived on the scene. The brazen incident has left locals bewildered and authorities vowing to crack down on such crimes.

Batteries Stolen, Threats Issued

The suspect, a 32-year-old man from Birkirkara, was apprehended by police on Tuesday evening after a garage owner raised the alarm. The owner had noticed the man acting suspiciously around his garage on Triq San Pawl in Msida and quickly realised that several car batteries were missing. When the police arrived, the man allegedly turned aggressive, issuing threats and refusing to cooperate.

“It was a strange situation,” said the garage owner, who wished to remain anonymous. “He seemed to know exactly what he was doing, but then when the police showed up, he just snapped. It’s like he didn’t care about the consequences.”

Police: “Such Behavior Will Not Be Tolerated”

Inspector Joseph Vella, who was present at the scene, condemned the man’s actions. “This was a brazen and reckless act,” he said. “Not only was he caught red-handed, but he also chose to threaten police officers who were simply doing their job. Such behavior will not be tolerated in our community.”

The man was subsequently arrested and remanded in custody on Wednesday morning, pending further investigations. Magistrate Dr. Donatella Frendo Dimech presided over the case, with the man being charged with theft and using threatening language.

Garage Owner Warns Others

The garage owner, while shaken by the incident, has a word of advice for other business owners. “Keep an eye out, especially at night,” he said. “We’ve had a few incidents lately, and it’s important that we all look out for each other. If something seems off, don’t hesitate to call the police.”

In response to the recent spate of thefts, the Malta Police Force has announced increased patrols in commercial areas, particularly at night. They are also urging business owners to invest in CCTV systems and other security measures to deter potential thieves.

As the investigation continues, the man remains in custody, with his case set to be heard again in a few weeks. The community awaits the outcome, hoping that this serves as a strong deterrent to would-be criminals.

In the meantime, the garage owner is left to pick up the pieces, with a stern warning to any potential thieves: “If you think you can come into my garage and steal from me, think again. We’re watching, and we won’t hesitate to call the police.”
