Hili Companies Sued for €500,000 by Former Executive
Hili Companies Facing €500,000 Lawsuit from Former Executive
In the heart of Malta’s bustling business district, at the corner of St. Lucia Street and Republic Street, the offices of Hili Companies stand tall, a symbol of the group’s influence in the local business scene. But today, the company’s reputation is under scrutiny as it faces a €500,000 lawsuit from a former executive.
From Boardroom to Courtroom
Dr. Adrian Hillman, a former executive director of Hili Companies, has taken the group to court, alleging wrongful dismissal and breach of contract. The case, which was filed at the First Hall of the Civil Court in Malta, seeks damages amounting to over €500,000.
Hillman, a British national who had been living in Malta for several years, joined Hili Companies in 2017. He held various senior roles within the group, including that of director at Hili Ventures and Hili Properties. However, his tenure ended abruptly in 2021, leading to the current legal dispute.
Allegations of Wrongful Dismissal
According to court documents, Hillman claims that he was dismissed without cause, in violation of his employment contract. He alleges that he was made the scapegoat for the company’s financial difficulties, despite his efforts to turn the business around.
“I was committed to Hili Companies and worked tirelessly to drive growth and innovation,” Hillman told Hot Malta. “I am disappointed that my efforts were not appreciated, and I am now left with no choice but to seek justice through the courts.”
Hili Companies Responds
When contacted for comment, a spokesperson for Hili Companies stated, “We are aware of the legal action taken against us by Dr. Hillman. We strongly deny the allegations made against us and will be defending ourselves robustly in court. We believe that the claims are without merit and we are confident that the court will uphold our position.”
The spokesperson also noted that the company has since appointed a new executive team and is focused on moving forward.
Implications for Malta’s Business Scene
The lawsuit against Hili Companies comes at a time when Malta’s business sector is grappling with a range of challenges, including the fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing economic recovery. The case has raised questions about employment practices and the treatment of senior executives in local companies.
“This case sends a strong message to employers in Malta,” said Dr. Joseph Borg, a local employment lawyer. “It of fair treatment and due process in employment matters. Companies must ensure that they have strong procedures in place to handle dismissals and that they comply with their legal obligations.”
The case is expected to be heard later this year, with a judgment potentially coming in early 2023. The outcome could have significant implications for Hili Companies and the local business scene more broadly.
