Munxar Motorcycle Crash: Local Man Seriously Injured

Emergency services rushed to Munxar late last night after a motorcyclist was found lying injured on Triq il-Kbira, just a stone’s throw from the picturesque St. Peter and St. Paul’s Church. The victim, a 35-year-old local man, was rushed to Mater Dei Hospital with serious injuries, leaving the close-knit community shaken.

What Happened?

The incident occurred around 10:30 PM, with eyewitnesses reporting a loud crash followed by the sound of a motorcycle engine revving erratically. Police quickly cordoned off the area, and an ambulance arrived shortly after. The motorcyclist, who has not been named pending notification of his family, was found with severe injuries to his legs and head.

According to preliminary investigations, the motorcyclist lost control of his bike near the junction with Triq l-Imqabba, causing him to be thrown from the vehicle. No other vehicles were involved in the incident. The motorcycle, a black Yamaha YZF-R6, was left badly damaged at the scene.

Community Response

News of the incident spread quickly through Munxar, with many residents expressing their concern and wishing the victim a swift recovery. “It’s a quiet road, we don’t expect such things to happen here,” said Maria, a long-time Munxar resident. “I hope the young man pulls through and makes a full recovery.”

Local councillor, Joseph Portelli, also expressed his concern, “Our thoughts are with the victim and his family. We urge everyone to be extra careful on our roads, especially at night. We don’t want to see another incident like this happen in our community.”

Road Safety in Malta

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety in Malta. According to the Malta Police, there have been 11 road fatalities so far this year, with many more serious injuries reported. Motorcyclists, in particular, are at a higher risk due to their exposure and the often unpredictable nature of Maltese roads.

Hot Malta reached out to the Malta Road Safety Council for comment. A spokesperson said, “We urge all road users to be extra vigilant, especially at night. Motorcyclists should always wear protective gear and ensure their vehicles are in good condition. Drivers should also do their part by looking out for motorcyclists and giving them the space they need.”
