Munxar Crash: Motorcyclist Seriously Injured, Community Calls for Safety Measures
In the quiet, picturesque village of Munxar, a serious motorcycle accident has left a local resident fighting for recovery, sparking a call for enhanced road safety measures in the close-knit community.
Accident Details and Response
The incident occurred on Triq il-Kuncizzjoni, a winding road that connects Munxar to nearby Xewkija, late last Tuesday evening. Eyewitnesses reported seeing the motorcyclist, a 35-year-old man, losing control of his bike on a sharp bend, before crashing into a stone wall.
Paramedics from the Maltese Civil Protection Department rushed to the scene, stabilising the injured man before transporting him to Mater Dei Hospital. He remains in serious but stable condition, with injuries including a broken leg and suspected internal bleeding.
Munxar’s local council has expressed its deepest sympathies to the victim and his family, with Mayor Mario Vella stating, “Our thoughts are with him and his loved ones during this difficult time. We hope for a swift recovery.”
Community Calls for Safety Improvements
News of the accident has through Munxar, with residents calling for immediate action to improve road safety. Triq il-Kuncizzjoni, while scenic, is known for its tight bends and lack of lighting, making it a challenge for motorists, especially at night.
Long-time Munxar resident and shop owner, Joseph Xuereb, told Hot Malta, “We’ve been saying for years that something needs to be done about this road. It’s only a matter of time before another accident happens if we don’t act now.”
Xuereb is not alone in his concerns. A petition has been circulating around Munxar, calling for improved lighting, clearer road signs, and even the possibility of traffic calming measures. As of today, over 200 signatures have been collected.
Local Authorities Respond
In response to the community’s outcry, the Gozo Regional Committee has announced it will be reviewing the safety of Triq il-Kuncizzjoni. Committee Chairman, Clint Camilleri, stated, “We share the community’s concerns and understand the urgency of the matter. We will be looking into potential solutions and will keep the public informed of our progress.”
Meanwhile, the Malta Police Force has reminded motorcyclists and all road users to adhere to speed limits and drive according to road conditions. Inspector Joseph Muscat said, “We urge everyone to prioritise safety on our roads. Slow down, stay alert, and always wear appropriate protective gear.”
As Munxar awaits the results of the review, one thing is clear: the close-knit community will not rest until meaningful action is taken to improve the safety of Triq il-Kuncizzjoni.
