Munxar Crash: Motorcyclist Seriously Injured in Gozo’s Latest Road Tragedy

Emergency services rushed to the scene of a serious motorcycle accident in Munxar, Gozo, late last night, where a young man was left fighting for his life. The crash, which occurred near the popular Ta’ Dbiegi Craft Village, has once again put the spotlight on road safety in Malta’s sister island.

What Happened?

The incident, involving a 25-year-old man from Xewkija, took place around 10:30 PM. According to eyewitnesses, the motorcyclist lost control of his bike on the winding Triq Ta’ Dbiegi, causing him to crash into a concrete barrier. The force of the impact left him with serious injuries, with reports suggesting he may have sustained internal injuries and a broken leg.

Paramedics from the Gozo General Hospital and volunteers from the Civil Protection Department arrived at the scene within minutes, stabilising the victim before transporting him to the hospital. His condition is currently described as critical but stable.

Road Safety Concerns in Gozo

This latest incident has reignited concerns about road safety in Gozo, particularly on the island’s winding, narrow roads. According to statistics from the Malta Police, there have been a total of 15 road accidents in Gozo so far this year, with three resulting in serious injuries.

Local residents and politicians have been vocal about the need for improved road safety measures. “We’ve been calling for better lighting, clearer road signs, and even speed cameras on some of these roads for years,” said a Munxar resident who wished to remain anonymous. “It’s only a matter of time before something like this happens again if nothing changes.”

Gozo Minister Justyne Caruana echoed these sentiments, stating, “We need to do more to ensure the safety of our roads. This latest incident is a stark reminder that we must prioritise road safety in our plans for Gozo’s development.”

Support Pouring In

News of the crash has through the close-knit Gozo community. Messages of support have been flooding in on social media, with many offering prayers and well-wishes to the victim and his family. A spokesperson for the victim’s family thanked the public for their support, saying, “We are overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support. It means the world to us.”

The victim’s friends have also started a fundraising campaign to help with his medical expenses. As of press time, over €2,000 has been raised.

What’s Next?

The Malta Police are currently investigating the cause of the crash. They are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information to come forward.

In the meantime, road safety advocates are calling for immediate action. “We can’t wait for another tragedy to happen before we make changes,” said a spokesperson for the Road Safety NGO. “We need to see concrete plans from the authorities, and we need to see them implemented now.”
