Voluntary Sector Gets Safety Boost: OHSA Extends Free Training

Imagine this: a bustling NGO office in Msida, where volunteers are busy preparing food parcels for families in need. Suddenly, a fire breaks out in the kitchen. Are they equipped to handle such a situation? This is where the Occupational Health and Safety Authority (OHSA) steps in, offering a lifeline to voluntary organisations across Malta.

A Lifesaving Initiative Renewed

The OHSA has extended its free health and safety training programme for voluntary organisations until the end of 2023. This initiative, first launched in 2021, aims to equip volunteers with the necessary skills to ensure their safety and that of the people they serve.

OHSA’s Chief Executive, Abigail Mamo, explains, “Voluntary organisations play a crucial role in our society. It’s our duty to ensure they have the tools to work safely and effectively.”

What’s on Offer?

The training programme covers a wide range of topics, from fire safety and first aid to manual handling and risk assessment. It’s tailored to the unique needs of voluntary organisations, ensuring that volunteers are prepared for any situation they might face.

OHSA is also offering guidance on setting up safety committees and implementing safety management systems. This hands-on approach helps organisations create a strong safety culture that lasts long after the training is over.

How to Sign Up

Voluntary organisations interested in the programme can apply online through the OHSA website. The process is simple and user-friendly, with dedicated support from OHSA’s team.

OHSA is also encouraging organisations to act now. “The earlier you apply, the sooner we can start working with you to create a safer working environment,” Mamo adds.

So, let’s go back to our Msida NGO. With OHSA’s training, those volunteers would be ready to handle that fire, or any other safety challenge, with confidence and skill. That’s the power of this initiative, making our voluntary sector not just caring, but also safe.
